An adaptogen is supposedly a substance that helps the body resist stress without pushing any system in a particular direction. It is a Soviet-era research category rather than a pharmacological one, and it is now broad enough to cover almost any herb someone wants to sell.
Which does not mean nothing in it works. A few have real human trials behind them, and they do different things.
Ashwagandha
- The best-studied of the group. Multiple randomised trials show reductions in perceived stress and in measured cortisol
- Sedating rather than stimulating — best taken in the evening, and it improves sleep quality in several trials
- Raises thyroid hormone modestly, which helps some people with sluggish thyroid function and is a problem for anyone hyperthyroid
- Standardised extracts at 300–600 mg daily are what the research used
- Caution in autoimmune conditions: it stimulates immune activity. Rare but real reports of liver injury exist
Rhodiola
- Effectively the opposite profile — mildly stimulating, used for fatigue and mental performance under load
- The evidence for reducing fatigue in shift workers and students is reasonable, if the trials are small
- Morning only. Taken late it interferes with sleep
- Look for extracts standardised to rosavins and salidroside; the market is full of adulterated material
Everything else in the category
Holy basil, schisandra, eleuthero, maca, cordyceps and the rest have traditional use and preliminary research. That is not the same as evidence, and they are frequently blended together in a proprietary formula at doses far below anything that was ever tested.
A blend of eight adaptogens at unnamed doses is a marketing decision, not a formulation. Nothing in it is present at a level any trial used.
The larger point
Nothing in this category addresses the cause of chronic stress. Sleep, light exposure, training load, alcohol, blood sugar stability and the actual circumstances of a life move the stress response far more than any herb. An adaptogen at best takes the edge off while the real inputs are corrected — and taken instead of correcting them, it does nothing durable.
